Living Wall of Aroids

Mass planting of maturing hemi-epiphytic climbers, appressed climbers, and epiphytic Aroids growing on the Living Wall of Aroids.

To encourage density and spatial distribution, growth, and survival of aerial roots on the climbing Aroids, organic fertilisers, inoculant, and a myriad of key ingredients, including a unique blend of nutrients, blood and bone, seaweed, fish, PSG (Peruvian Seabird Guano), humic and fulvic acid and triacontanol.

A wide range of minerals and trace elements are also applied h helps feed microbial activity super-boosted with added humic and fulvic acids.

In July 2021 we introduced floating gardens at the base of the Living Wall with a CocoCoir Blend to encourage growth from the base of the wall.

Design of the Living Wall of Aroids

The Living Wall of Aroids is made from 100% recycled P.E.T. plastic bottles.

The felt is not effected by moisture, when the product becomes wet it will not rot and will retain it’s form without sagging.

Hemiepiphytic climbing aroids are plant at the base of the living wll in na Premiuum CocoCoir Blend, and as they muture aerial roots attach to the surface of the felt.

Living Pot with Totems

As part of the new design of the Living Walls of Aroids, we’re introducing Living Pots with Totems to expand the display of our maturing aroids.

The Living Pots are covered with a felt made from 100% recycled plastic PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles.

The fibrous composition and moisture retention of the felt, supplemented with microscopic water droplets (fogging) will promote development, density and spatial distribution of aerial roots.

As with the Living Wall of Aroids, the Living Pots & Totems will be reclaimed over time by nature with non-vascular mosses providing a contrast to maturing aroids.

The Living Pots with Totems were created as a unique way of growing and presenting maturing hemiepiphytic climbing Philodendrons.

The Living Pots will assist is creating a maze of vertical growth amongst my extensive collection of the family of Araceae, growing on the Living Wall of Aroids modules within the Araceae Cloud Forest.

As a collector and educator, I’m always looking at creative ways to grow and promote the beauty of maturing aroids in an environment in harmony with Mother Nature.

Goals were to use recycled products and integrate them in a way that ‘Mother Nature’ will reclaim them without decomposition, maintaining the integrity of the environment to support the longevity of maturing aroids growing in/on the Living Pots and Totems.

Natural Mosses

They're ancient plants

Over time the Living Pots & Totems will be covered with Mosses as shown in the attached image.

Mosses are non-flowering plants which produce spores and have stems and leaves, but don't have true roots.

Mosses, are classified as Bryophyta (bryophytes) in the plant kingdom.

They date back 450 million years, and have survived and thrived through a range of drastic climate changes.

Comprised of 15,000 – 25,000 species, they occur on every continent and in every ecosystem habitable by plants that use sunlight for energy.

Among the world of plants, the bryophytes are the second most diverse group exceeded only by the angiosperms, the flowering plants (350,000 species).
